Ken Loach speaks on AI in filmmaking at Greek Directors Guild 50th anniversary
FERA member Greek Directors Guild is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, they organized a roundtable on 9 November entitled “A.I. in Art & Cinema” at the 65th Thessaloniki International Film Festival which brought together film industry professionals and filmmakers to discuss the impact, advances, risks & opportunities posed by AI.
FERA Honorary President Ken Loach recorded a video message congratulating the Greek Directors Guild. He called filmmakers to be wary of AI: being based on existing material, it cannot express human experience in all its spontaneity.
“There are special moments that I know, as directors, we cherish when we see it happen in front of the camera. We say, ‘wow, that’s the gold I’ve been looking for!’ And that can never be replaced by artificial intelligence.”
Ken Loach’s message introduced the panel moderated by filmmakers Tonis Lykouresi & Eliza Soroga, which gathered Epameinondas Christofilopoulos (Head of the UNESCO Chair on Futures Research hosted at FORTH and President of MOMus – Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki), Vassilis K. Karaminitsanis (president of ANIMASYROS Festival), and Alexandros Kostopoulos (Filmmaker, PhD Informatics Athens University of Economics). The discussion concluded that since AI is set to transform every aspect of life, it is crucial to foster its ethical and sensible application in filmmaking.
